Spring Gardening

Spring is finally here, you can almost see gardens waking up with daffodils, tulips and blossom showing that the warmer weather is just around the corner.
Here is a reminder of the few tasks to get your garden ready for the spring growth period.

Clean up
Now is the time to weed garden beds, making sure to remove weeds by their roots. Put into the green waste bin or your compost. The Colac-Otway Shire are offering a weekly green bin pickup service from the 23rd October to 1st Dec 2017 in order to help landowners get ready for the fire season ahead. It’s also a good time to tidy up the garden shed & to sharpen tools ready for the season. Brush down your outdoor furniture and get it out of the shed so you can enjoy the sunny days that are not far away.

Feed the soil
Now with the warmer weather, it is time to care for your soil. Add compost or well-aged manure to your garden beds, particularly your vegie beds to improve the health and water holding capacity of the soil. Add a mulch as well to help suppress weeds but make sure the soil is moist underneath as sometimes the mulch can prevent water/rain reaching the soil.

Start planting
Get green crops in like lettuce, rocket, silver beet and other pick again salad greens. Perhaps make a start on your herbs but as it is still cold at night, wait a while before planting basil.
